Derivatives of Plain Weaves:-
,RIB WEAVES:-
The rib weaves are the derivatives of the plain weave. The vertical or horizontal lines get appeared on the fabric surface when the rib weave is woven. Rib weave is a very common weave. It can be woven on tappet, dobby, and jacquard. In this weave, one series of warp and one series of weft get used. This weave is a production-friendly weave. The ribbed fabric can be woven at very good efficiency and quality.
Classification of Rib weave:-

As above only the drawing , weaving (peg) plan of rib weaves are given of plain weave derivatives. Their features and uses are given as under. Also some other weaves which comes under plain derivatives, description and features are given.
Features of Warp Rib Waeves:-
(1) It produces rib or cord effect in weft direction.
(2) Extending plain weave vertically.
(3) Finer yarn used as warp and coarser as weft yarn.
(4) The number of ends/inch are more than the number of picks/inch.
(5) Low twisted yarn is used as weft.
(6) Warp yarns are used as a single yarn and weft yarns are used as group or bundle yarns.
REGULAR WARP RIB WEAVES:- (a)Formula number: X/X [ X=Number of warp up in repeat]
(b) Regular appearance is shown in the fabric.
(c) Used as grosgrain cloth, mattress cloth etc.
IRREGULAR WARP RIB WEAVES:-
(a) Formula number: X/ Y [ X=Number of warp up in repeat and Y=Number of weft up in repeat.
(b) Irregular appearance is shown in the fabric.
(c) Used as grosgrain cloth, mattress cloth etc.
Features of Weft Rib Weaves:-
(1) It produces rib or cord effect in warp direction.
(2) Extending plain weave horizontally.
(3) Finer yarn used as weft and coarser as warp yarn.
(4) The number of picks/inch are more than the number of ends/inch.
(5) Low twisted yarn is used as warp.
(6) Weft yarns are used as a single yarn and warp yarns are used as group or bundle yarns.
(6) Used as hair cords, blankets etc.
REGULAR WEFT RIB WEAVES:-
(a) Formula number: 1/1 (X) [ X=Number of warp up in repeat]
(b) Regular appearance is shown in the fabric.
IRREGULAR WEFT RIB WEAVE:-
(a) Formula number: 1/1 (X+Y)
(b) Irregular appearance is shown in the fabric.
Features of Matt/Hopsack)/Basket Weaves:-
(1) It is constructed by extending the plain weave both vertically and horizontally.
(2) Combination of warp and weft rib.
(3) Loose structure.
(4) The smallest matt weave is 2 / 2 (2) (X) matt.
(5) Basket weave fabrics are more flexible and wrinkle resistant because there are fewer interlacing per square inch.
(6) It has a greater resistance to tearing.
(7) Matt weaves tend to give smooth-surfaced fabrics.
REGULAR MATT WEAVES:-
(a) Formula number: X/X (X) [ X=Number of warp up in repeat]
(b) It is produced by the combination of regular warp and weft rib weave.
IRREGULAR MATT WEAVES:-
(1) Formula number: X/Y (X+Y) [ X=Number of warp up in repeat and Y=Number of weft up in repeat]
(2) It is produced by the combination of regular warp and weft rib weave.
Some irregular Matt Weaves:-
STITCHED MATT WEAVES:-
(1) Formula number: X/X (X) [ X=Number of warp up in repeat]
(2) In this weave stitch is used to avoid looseness of yarn in the fabric.
(3) To produce a firm cloth with lower setting, the center ends in each square can be stitched.
(4) In warp face, the central warp yarn goes down and in weft face, the central warp yarn comes up.
FANCY MATT WEAVES:-
(1) Formula number: X/X (X) [ X=Number of warp up in repeat]
(2) In stitched matt, the stitching thread is hidden by the neighbouring threads. But in the fancy matt the stitching threads are not hidden, they are visible.
(3) They produce decorative appearance on the fabric surface.
Uses of Matt weaves:-
Matt weave finds extensive uses for a great variety of fabrics such as dress materials, shirtings, sail cloth, duck cloth etc.
